Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful times in a womans life. Here you are with a whole new life growing inside you – an amazing gift. Whilst you celebrate this new life, you might also be left feeling emotionally and physically icky. Early pregnancy can cause all manner of physical symptoms and whilst your hormones go a bit wacky so can your emotions, mid-pregnancy is the lovely bit where everything settles down a bit and your bump takes on a whole new lease of life and towards the end of pregnancy you might find that those irksome physical horribles return and your emotions might once again become a bit jumpy. All of this is happening while you still carry on with your day to day lives, commuting, working, looking after children, looking after parents, looking after your homes, cooking, cleaning, organising and dealing with stresses and strains of every day life.
Taking time to include regular yoga practice or some mindfulness might just allow you that time and space to really embrace the changes in your body, acknowledging that at the end of your pregnancy journey there will be a new addition to your family unit. Some of the other benefits of a yoga practice in pregnancy can be:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Becoming stronger in mind and body
- Alleviating physical and mental tension
- Preparing yourself for labour and birth
- Meeting others in the same situation as you and forging new friendships
- ‘Me’ time
- Increased fitness levels
- Increased self awareness
- Better quality sleep
Taking just a little time out for yourself and for your bump could be just what you need!
